Description

Orebic in the south of the Pelješac peninsula a ferry port and a popular seaside resort with sandy beaches on - Pelješki channel. It is located at the foot of Sveti Ilija, highest mountain of the peninsula. The fantastic view over the Pelješac peninsula and the Adriatic Sea has to be fought for by a long walk. The signposted path begins as a road in the west of the village and leads past the Franciscan monastery to the village Bilo Polje, here begins the hiking trail and the climb to the 961m high mountain.

The village was named after the family that restored the castle in the fortified settlement in 1586. In 1707 Emperor Joseph granted the hereditary title of nobility to the Orebić family for more than 70 years of naval warfare and maritime trade especially in salt trade, this famously contributed to Dalmatia prosperity. Orebić provided17 admirals to the Austro-Hungarian Navy!

The historic captains' houses line the waterfront and the importance of the captains to Dalmatia can still be seen in the grandiose gardens. Most of the houses are family owned.
Many artifacts from this period are displayed in the maritime museum, which is well worth seeing, and in the Franciscan monastery.
In the eastern part of town is a winery with a tasting room for local varieties such as Pošip and Plavac Mali. In the tourist office, east of the port, you can find out the opening hours.
There are ferry connections:
Rijeka-Split-Stari Grad (Hvar) - Korčula-Mljet-Dubrovnik-Bari It.
