Description

The history of the monastery dates back to 1198, when Pope Innocent III gave his consent to the Benedictine monastery on the island of St. Maija. In 1345, the Benedictines gave up their authority on part of the island, and Mljet came to the Republic of Dubrovnik.
The monastery was in operation until 1809, when it came under Napoleon's rule and has since been administered by the state, converted into a hotel in 1960, and returned to the  Diocese of Dubrovnik in 1998.
