Mali Ston, a historical fortified town with a fortified tower at
the port, was an outpost of the medieval Republic of Dubrovnik
(Republic of Ragusa). In 1358 the construction of the wall to Mali
Ston was started, across the narrowest part of the peninsula. It
was intended to secure the salt lagoons, the most important sources
of income for the Republic of Dubrovnik. Today it is one of the
best preserved fortification systems in the world and known as the
"European Wall of China".
